Couples & Family Therapy

Couples and family therapy focuses on issues that exist in relationships and the family system.  While the specific problem of a partner or family member may be the initial focus of couples or family therapy, resolving these problems often requires a cooperative, collaborative approach.  The understanding, involvement, and commitment of each family member is critical to growth and healing.

The foundation of success in couples and family counseling is a trusting and respectful therapist/client relationship, a clear understanding of the problem or issues involved, collaborative goal setting, and an open atmosphere.  In addition, many issues traditionally addressed in individual counseling can be treated successfully within the context of couples or family counseling.  For example, treatment for addictive behavior an substance abuse, with has been found to yield more positive outcomes with some family involvement.

Spring Grove practitioners strive to include partners and family members whenever possible or appropriate.  Further, "family" is broadly defined as inclusive of those members identified by the client and may include: extended family members, stepparents, siblings, grandparents, family friends, life partners, or romantic partners.
