Professional Experience
Dr. Patterson has
worked as a therapist since 1996 in a variety of settings, including a family violence
shelter, a residential substance abuse treatment center, a school system, a university
counseling center, as a consultant to the division of family services, and in
private practice. She has conducted psychological
evaluations since 2003.
Dr. Patterson
has coordinated several resource and outreach
programs addressing issues such as sexual violence, sexual health, gender
identity and sexual orientation, and multiculturalism; she has been a board member of
the PRISM-Gay Straight Youth Alliance and a volunteer for the Center Project.
She is currently a board member of Performing Arts in Children's Education
(PACE), a not-for-profit all-youth theater company.
Theoretical Orientation/Approach to Therapy
With a strong background in women’s issues, relational concerns, trauma and recovery,
addictions and substance abuse, gender identity and sexual orientation issues, and group therapy, Dr. Patterson utilizes an integrative
orientation within a general practice framework. Accessing the tenets of psychodynamic,
feminist, multicultural, cognitive
behavioral, and body-centered approaches, Dr. Patterson focuses on the whole
person.
She increasingly incorporates elements of mind-body interventions such as
Heart Rate Variability
Biofeedback (HRV), Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), and Eye Movement
Desensitization & Reprocessing (EMDR).
Dr. Patterson's emphasizes a collaboration between client and
therapist striving for increased support, understanding and awareness of patterns
contributing to current difficulties, learning new skills, and experiencing new
ways of being.
