BiofeedbackBiofeedback is the process of measuring and displaying information about various aspects of physical functioning (e.g., heart rate, skin conductance, brainwaves). This information is typically shown on a computer screen and used to teach the client ways to change dysfunctional patterns that may be present. In most cases this means attaching a sensor to a tense muscle, the scalp or to a finger. Each type of biofeedback can be used in the treatment of different physical and emotional conditions. For example, Heart Rate Variability Biofeedback (HRV) has been shown to significantly decrease the risk of heart problems in persons with heart disease. The same training has also been found to be a powerful tool in learning to relax, relieve stress, and improve decision making, concentration, and decision making. Brainwave Biofeedback, often called EEG Biofeedback, neurofeedback, or neurotherapy has been shown to be a powerful treatment for ADHD and seizure disorders. This treatment has also been successfully used with closed head injuries, anxiety, depression, and learning disorders. Muscle biofeedback (EMG biofeedback or SEMG biofeedback) is an excellent intervention for persons with chronic muscle tension. This treatment is also used for tension headaches and TMJ. |
